The use of lime mortar is imperative when repairing or restoring natural stone buildings or walls, as the mortar allows a certain amount of movement within the structure. Using lime mortar instead of cement when pointing or re-building stone walls allows a greater porosity and so lets the surface breathe. The result is a permanent solution whereas by comparison, sand and cement will retain water behind the stonework and eventually crack, leading to problems related to damp.
