Exterior Lime Rendering
Rendering the outside of a property with lime entails a process whereby first of all the old render is removed. Check for any places that need to be rebuilt or if lintels need to be replaced, as this is the time to do it. Don't ignore any rotten places as they will always be a source of trouble in the future.

Using lime mortar - a mixture of sand and lime putty- usually a 3:1 mix, the rendering process begins. The first coat is applied- known as the scat coat (or harling).  This is allowed to dry before putting on the dub coat, which has hair added to it for strength. Once this is dried on the wall, the final top coat is applied (with no added hair) then floated and either sponge finished or scat, depending on the desired end result.
